Dauphin Herald 27 Jan 1927: Poem on Bliss Carman written by Mrs. T.
      Playford

"Written on the occasion of Dr. Carmen's visit to Dauphin on Jan. 21, 1927.

Amid a hush that was profound,
      The poet rose to speak,
And then a low, sweet voice did sound,
      In accents soft and meek.

He told what poetry can do,
      For people everywhere,
It fills the soul with thoughts anew,
It lifts the load of care.

With a sweet ecstacy it fills,
      The longing, human mind,
It doth in birds, and flowers, and rills,
      Sweet inspiration find.

It helps us good, new things to see,
      In everything we scan,
In bird and field, in flower and tree,
      And in our fellow man.

But, when his own sweet poems he read,
      He led us far away,
By the Columbia's shore in tread,
      And back to Fundy's Bay.

We wandered o'er the deep. deep snow
      Through winter's fading light:
And seemed to feel the camp fire's glow
When we reached home at night.
